I have never thought about this before...
If Roger and Richard say it was Rick, it must be. It does sound like him occasionally, especially the beginning.
I never heard them do any of the gentle stuff from that first album at any gigs. They did Long Road, Nothing To Show and Try Again, maybe something else.

Dear Abel,
The lead vocal credits on the first Supertramp album are:
SURELY: Roger
IT’S A LONG ROAD: Roger
BIRDS OF PREY: Roger
WORDS UNSPOKEN: Roger
MAYBE I’M A BEGGAR: Me and Roger
HOME AGAIN: Roger
NOTHING TO SHOW: Rick and Roger
SHADOW SONG: Rick (Roger sings harmonies, and lead in the 'middle 8’)
TRY AGAIN: Roger (I am whispering in unison on the verses)
SURELY (FINALE): Roger
Shadow Song: I agree with Klaus that Rick’s voice sounds quite different on the ‘mature’ vocals later in his career. But I’d like to point out that, although both Rick and I had several years of live performance behind us in spring 1970, our experience of recording vocals (or anything else) in a professional studio was practically zero. So we were both pretty nervous about singing, especially as Roger was streets ahead of us in this department, which can be plainly heard on the album.
And of course Klaus is also right to question the accuracy of my memory after four decades. I’m sure Rick composed the verses of Shadow Song, but the middle part may have been written by Roger, who in any case was the only one of us capable of hitting those high falsettos. However, as I was responsible for the album’s lyrics, I was present and attentive while all the vocals were recorded, in case any last-minute changes might have been necessary, and I’m damn’ near certain who sang what.
Far from being forgotten, Shadow Song is just about my favourite from the album, and I sometimes sing it nowadays on singer-songwriter appearances - nota bene, an octave deeper… It works well with guitar. I’ve learned the chords at last.
Maybe I’m A Beggar: I had a terrible cold. I wish Roger had sung all of it. But we stuck to swapping the verses in the way we were used to doing it live.
As always, many thanks to you -and certainly to Klaus S.- for your continued interest. As Oscar Wilde knew, it’s wonderful to be talked about.
Richard

Trust you are well.
It is definitely Rick on lead vocal. Yes, they did perform it live in the early years.
Best wishes,
Andy

No logro imaginarme a Rick con ese tono. Pero si lo dicen los protagonistas, será asi.
