Hi Abel,
I unfortunately cannot tell you which of Supertramp’s masters were lost as all that has been released thus far, to my knowledge, is the list of artists.
The deluxe edition of ‘Crime’ was mastered from a copy tape. When the project was initially started by Universal the request was put in for the stereo masters and we were told only “They are not available”.
We tried a couple of more times and were once again told “They are not available”. No explanation was ever given.
A request was then put in for a safety copy and the first one sent was awful. Ray Staff, the mastering engineer, then requested every copy they had.
After sifting through many diabolical sounding tapes, a copy was found that was a lot closer to the original and it was that which was used for the deluxe edition.
Ray did an amazing job, but it would certainly have been better if the originals had not been lost.
Cheers,
Ken

Hi Abel,
Thanks for your email.
We were all aware of the fire, as it has been an open secret for a number of years, but we never knew the extent of it.
We all read the New York Times article with horror a couple of weeks ago. It is absolutely tragic.
We are looking into what may or not have been lost. I’m not sure how long a reply may take.
Mobile Fidelity also re-mastered ‘Breakfast in America’ last year using the master tapes, so I’m assuming the master survived or more likely wasn’t there at the time of the fire.
But who knows about the multi tracks and the rest of the catalogue?
Best regards,
Peter
